How to Make a Denim Apron

Posted on July 2, 2025November 11, 2025 By Becko

Let me just start by saying: I love a good upcycling project. Give me a tired old pair of jeans and a rainy Sunday afternoon, and I’m in my happy place. So when I first stumbled on the idea of making a denim apron from old jeans, I was all in. It’s practical, looks amazing, and gives off that effortlessly cool, “I do pottery and grow herbs” vibe — even if you’re just wearing it while baking banana bread (guilty).

Whether you’re crafting one for messy DIY jobs, cooking in style, or making a handmade gift that isn’t another scented candle, a denim apron ticks all the boxes. And honestly? It’s a lot easier than it looks.

So, pop the kettle on, grab those old jeans hiding at the back of your wardrobe, and let’s get making!

Why Make Your Own Denim Apron?

If you’re new to sewing or just fancy dipping a toe into the DIY world, a denim apron is a great place to start. It’s low-pressure, super forgiving (thanks, thick sturdy denim), and it looks like you spent hours crafting it — even if it only took an afternoon.

Here’s why I’m obsessed:

  • Upcycled goodness – Sustainable and chic? Yes please.

  • Denim is durable – Perfect for everything from baking to woodworking.

  • Custom fit and style – Make it long, short, with pockets, without… the choice is yours.

  • It’s a vibe – A handmade denim apron says, “I’ve got this,” even when you’re elbow-deep in flour.

What You’ll Need to Make your Denim Apron

Don’t worry – you don’t need a whole haberdashery to make this. Here’s what I used:

Tools & Materials:

  • One old pair of jeans (adult size, preferably)

  • Fabric scissors

  • Seam ripper (optional but handy)

  • Sewing machine (or a needle and strong thread if hand sewing)

  • Pins or clips

  • Tailor’s chalk or washable pen

  • Measuring tape

  • Optional extras: contrasting thread, leather strips or cotton tape for straps, extra fabric for pockets

Top tip: If you want a rustic, well-loved look, faded jeans work beautifully. If you’re after a sleeker, darker finish, dig out a pair of near-new denims that don’t fit anymore (we all have them!).

Step-by-Step: How to Make a Denim Apron

Step 1: Deconstruct Your Jeans

This bit’s kind of therapeutic. Start by cutting along the inseam of each leg to open them up flat. If you’re using just one leg of the jeans, that might be enough fabric — but I prefer using both for flexibility and a longer apron length.

Cut up the side seams and remove the waistband. Keep the back pockets! They make great additions later.

Step 2: Measure and Cut Your Apron Shape

measuring apron

Lay the fabric flat, inside out. Use tailor’s chalk or a washable pen to draw your apron shape. Think of a large rectangle with the top corners curved off — or go rogue and trace around an existing apron you like.

Aim for around 28–30 inches long and 20–24 inches wide, but it’s totally up to you.

Cut it out carefully. If you want a hemmed finish, add half an inch all around for seam allowance.

Step 3: Add Pockets (Because… obviously)

Remember those back pockets we saved? Now’s their time to shine.

Place them wherever feels right – I like one in the centre for a tea towel and one off to the side for bits and bobs. You could also cut new pockets from the leftover denim. Pro tip: Line them with a pop of patterned fabric if you’re feeling fancy.

Sew the pockets onto your apron front, making sure you double-stitch at the top corners for strength.

Step 4: Hem the Edges

This step is optional but neat. Fold the edges in by half an inch, then fold again to enclose the raw edge. Pin or clip them down and sew all the way around. If you’re more into the rustic, raw-edge look, just do a single fold and let it fray slightly over time. It gives that cool, lived-in aesthetic.

Step 5: Add Straps

You’ve got options here:

  • Use leftover waistband for a neck loop or waist ties.

  • Cut strips of denim and fold/sew them into strong ties.

  • Use cotton tape or leather straps for a mixed-material look (love this with contrast stitching!).

Attach one neck loop and two waist ties with a strong zig-zag or double stitch. Make sure they’re comfortable and sit at the right height.

That’s It – You’ve Made a Denim Apron!

Time to stand back and admire your work! Isn’t it so satisfying when something you made is not only cute but also actually useful?

Mine’s already covered in flour and coffee stains (don’t judge), but it’s holding up like a champ. I’ve also whipped up a couple as gifts — add a wooden spoon and a handwritten recipe card and you’ve got yourself a gorgeous handmade pressie.

Fun Denim Apron Variations to Try

Once you’ve made your first, it’s hard to stop. Here are some ideas for your next DIY denim apron:

  • Cross-back style – No neck pressure, super comfy for long wear.

  • Two-tone denim – Use different washes for a patchwork effect.

  • Lined version – Add a printed cotton backing for a polished finish.

  • Mini kids’ version – Adorable and they’ll love helping you bake!

You can even embroider your name (or a cheeky slogan) onto the front. Or sew on a label that says “Made with love – and old jeans.” You do you.

FAQs: Everything You Need to Know About Making a Denim Apron

Can I make a denim apron without a sewing machine?

Absolutely! Denim is thicker than regular fabric, but with a strong needle, some patience, and sturdy thread, you can hand sew the whole thing. Focus on small, even stitches and double up on areas like pocket corners and straps. If you do want to use a sewing machine, I have some great tips here.

What type of jeans work best for a DIY denim apron?

Mid-weight denim jeans are ideal — not too stretchy and not too stiff. Look for a pair with minimal rips or distressing (unless that’s your aesthetic). Men’s jeans often provide more fabric, especially for longer aprons.

How do I wash a homemade denim apron?

Just pop it in the machine with your regular load! Denim aprons get softer with age. I recommend a cold or 30°C wash to help the stitching last longer. Air dry to keep its shape.

Can I make a denim apron without a pattern?

Yes! One of the best things about this project is its simplicity. A basic apron shape is just a rectangle with two corners curved off. You can freehand it, trace around an apron you already own, or search online for a printable denim apron template if you prefer more structure.

What can I use a denim apron for?

So many things! Use it while cooking, gardening, painting, woodworking, crafting with kids, or even as a stylish barista-style apron for your next coffee morning. The beauty of a denim apron is how versatile and durable it is.

How do I make a cross-back denim apron?

Instead of a neck loop, make two long straps that criss-cross over your back and attach at the opposite waist sides. It’s comfier for long wear and looks fab. There are lots of free tutorials on Pinterest or YouTube to guide you through this style.

Making your own denim apron is one of those rare DIY projects that’s equal parts fun, useful, and aesthetically pleasing. It’s like the sourdough starter of the crafting world — once you’ve got one, you’re kind of hooked.

It’s also a great little side hustle if you want to sell them at markets or online (hello, Etsy shop dreams). And let’s not forget the smug satisfaction of answering “Oh this? I made it myself” when someone compliments your cool, practical apron.

So next time you’re about to chuck those jeans into the donation bag, think again. There’s a stylish, eco-friendly denim apron waiting to be made — and trust me, once you start, you’ll never look back.
