Monogrammed Kitchen Towels

monogrammed kitchen towels

Monogrammed kitchen towels are one of my favorite things. I recently made two sets of these for my friends’ birthdays.

These are just plain dish towels from Ikea. Any linen or thin cotton kitchen towels with minimal decoration would work. You’ll want to wash and iron your towels before you get started. I found my monograms online (all were designed by Three Designing Women.)

I printed the monograms in reverse onto iron-on transfer paper and then cut closely around the designs, leaving roughly a 1/8 in border. It doesn’t have to be perfect by any means, but if you leave way too much space, you will see white around the edges of your towel.

I then laid a thin pillowcase on my kitchen countertop to do my ironing. You want a hard, heat-resistant surface. (Do not use an ironing board…too much padding and your monogram won’t stick well.) I arranged my cut out designs with the printed, non-lined side down on the towel. Using the cotton setting, no steam, I basically just left the iron on the design for about 20 seconds. You want to make sure the whole design is covered by the iron, but don’t want to move back and forth with the iron as you normally would. Peel off the backing once the monogram has completely cooled. Hope you enjoy!

Materials:

Monogram design
Iron-on transfer paper (I used Jolee’s brand from Michaels and it worked very well)
Scissors
Pillowcase
Plain or minimally decorated tea towels
Iron
