Instead of my wedding dress being tucked away and sealed, only to be seen once in awhile, I decided to make it into a Christmas tree skirt. Although it was heart-wrenching to cut into it, at least this way, I get to stare at it for a month every year!
My mum definitely knows her way around a sewing machine. She took on my request, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
First you will need a paper pattern. We used a purchased pattern and modified it to make our own. Instead of the multiple pie shaped pieces included in the purchased pattern, we put several pieces together to come up with two semi circular pattern pieces.
Cutting off the top of the dress is the scariest part.
Pin the pattern to the parts of the dress that you want to cut for the skirt. Then cut. This dress was in two layers, a gauzy layer with beading and then a satin layer. We cut the correct shape from both and then sewed them together.
We then sewed the two semi circles together at the side, leaving the other side open for binding and Velcro. We stiched double-sided binding inside the top edge (where it will touch the tree), around the bottom and along the open side. The final step is to sew a strip of Velcro along the side seam so that the skirt will close when you place it around the tree.
There are lots of options for other types of fringe and embellishments, but we chose to keep the trim very simple not to detract from the pretty fabric and beading already on the dress.
