Powder Room Update
My mom “hired” me to consult on some updates around her house. One of my favorite projects was this makeover of the cabinet and artwork in the first floor powder room. Although your powder room is a small space, I think it’s an important room to keep updated because a lot of your guests will see it.
We went to Scott Antique Market to find replacement artwork. If you’re near Atlanta, you have got to go to Scott. It’s overwhemingly amazing, and they have some of the best chicken salad in the Southeast. The existing rose pictures were literally from my project in middle school to redecorate my bedroom, so naturally they had to go. We ended up with these gorgeous framed clay ornaments. So unique and such a huge improvement.
While we were there, we also saw this beauty. He became the inspiration behind our cabinet redo.
Initially we set out to replace the cabinet, but it’s the perfect size for the room, so we decided to reface it instead. New paint and hardware brought this guy forward decades.
As a first step, we removed the hardware and wiped all of the wood with liquid sander to remove the existing lacquer shine. Liquid sander is awesome stuff by the way. We taped the edges around the glass (sorry I neglected a picture of that step…I may have been drinking wine while we worked) and applied a first coat of chalk paint.
The color we used is Behr Dolphin Fin. We mixed the chalk paint using the following recipe:
1 cup paint
2 Tb unsanded grout (available at any hardware store)
1 Tb water
Because we used chalk paint, we didn’t need to prime first. It provided really good, smooth coverage. We let the first coat dry for a few hours.
For the second coat, we used plain paint without the unsanded grout mixed in. The first coat was thick and opaque enough that we just needed a thin second coat.
After several days, we applied paste wax to finish everything off, and replaced the old door pulls with these handsome devils (from Home Depot.) The new hardware just has so much character. I love it! What a huge improvement…don’t you agree?
