How to Make Authentic Torta de Asada at Home
Step 1: Marinate the Steak
- In a mixing bowl, combine the lime juice, orange juice, olive oil, minced garlic, cumin, chilli powder, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and sliced jalapeño (if using).
- Place your steak in a shallow dish or ziplock bag and pour the marinade over it.
- Make sure the steak is fully coated, then cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (overnight is best for maximum flavour).
Step 2: Grill the Steak
- Heat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
- Remove the steak from the marinade and let any excess drip off.
- Grill for 3–5 minutes per side for medium-rare (depending on thickness).
- Rest the steak on a cutting board for 5–10 minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
Step 3: Prep the Bread
- Slice each bolillo roll in half lengthwise.
- If you’re using refried beans, spread them on the bottom half.
- You can lightly toast the bread for extra crunch and flavour.
Step 4: Assemble the Torta
- Spread mashed avocado or lay down slices on the bread.
- Add your juicy, sliced steak.
- Layer tomato slices and lettuce leaves.
- Spoon over some salsa (go as spicy as you dare).
- Top with pickled jalapeños if you love heat.
- Close the sandwich, press down slightly, and enjoy!
