How to Make Torta de Jamón at Home
Here’s the step-by-step method for creating a drool-worthy Torta de Jamón that tastes just like the ones from Mexican street food stalls.
      Step 1: Prep Your Bread
      1. Slice your bolillo or telera rolls in half lengthwise, but don’t cut all the way through — you want it to open like a book. If you like your bread extra crispy, you can toast it lightly in a dry pan or under the grill for a couple of minutes.
      Step 2: Spread the Love
      1. On one side of the bread, spread your mayonnaise. On the other side, spread a thin layer of refried beans if you’re using them. This gives you that delicious creamy-savoury base.
      Step 3: Layer the Ingredients
      1. Add your slices of ham first (so the heat from any toasting will warm them slightly), then cheese, avocado slices, tomato, and lettuce. If you’re adding jalapeños, now’s the time.
      Step 4: Season & Close
      1. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper, then gently press the sandwich closed. If you want the cheese to melt, you can pop the whole thing back into a warm pan and press it gently for a minute or two on each side (like making a panini).
      Step 5: Serve & Enjoy
      1. Serve immediately while the bread is warm and the fillings are fresh. Pair it with a cold soda or agua fresca for the ultimate street food vibe.
